The River –
A Symphonic Composition for Harp, Symphony Orchestra, Voice Solo and Children’s Choir
The journey of a single drop of water from its birth to its return to Oneness.
The composition tells the story of a single drop of water that falls into/out of the spring of a mountain river, symbolizing the beginning of life and the flow of existence. The drop travels through valleys, waterfalls, and lakes, sometimes challenged, sometimes joyfully travelling or resting, joining more “brothers and sisters” the closer it gets to the ocean, thus gradually becoming part of a mighty, wonderful river.
As the river finally reaches the vast ocean, it trembles before the immensity – the unity of all things, the home, the divine – the place from which everything comes and to which everything ultimately returns. At last, the drop fulfills its destiny, merging with the ocean and completing its cycle.
The piece emerged during a three-year stay in a remote yurt in Southwest Alentejo, where I was deeply moved by the absence – and the almost imagined presence – of water during a period of drought.
It is a lyrical and vivid composition for full symphony orchestra and children’s choir. Along the way, the music intertwines traditional elements of the Austrian waltz with more modern and experimental approaches to composition.
This composition was made using a deeply intuitive method that I call the “Intuitive FingerFlow Method”, where I give intuition the lead, while the brain stays quite.
