Creme de ervilhas
We are finally arriving in Portugal! I have been postponing this cuisine, as this is a very special one in my life … as it is the cuisine of my now beloved new home country! When I first arrived in Portugal, I was enchanted by its vibrant culture, rich history, and not so much, its food. So much meat! And so little to eat as vegetarian … I was, culinarily, disappointed. But – I kept hopes high to one day find my way to its heart. After more than 3 years, this country, now my home, holds a special place in my heart, not only for its breathtaking landscapes and friendly people but also because it is here that I transitioned to a vegan lifestyle. The journey has been both exciting and eye-opening as I began to explore traditional Portuguese dishes, adapting them to my plant-based diet. Though this cuisine was unfamiliar at first, it quickly became dear to me, with its emphasis on fresh produce, bold flavors, and simple but comforting meals. Each dish I create now feels like a connection to my new home, and the process of veganizing these recipes allows me to keep tradition alive while embracing my values.
One dish I’ve come to know and enjoy lately is creme de ervilhas (pea soup). Traditionally a creamy, hearty soup, it’s easy to adapt to a vegan version. Made with tender peas, fragrant herbs, and often finished with a splash of olive oil, this soup perfectly captures the essence of Portuguese comfort food—simple, nourishing, and delicious. It’s one of those meals that warms you from the inside out and makes you feel at home, no matter where you are.
Enjoy this very simple almost vegan portuguese dish!
