Strawberry Plant-Milkshake
We’re exploring again classic American treats reimagined with a vegan twist, and tonight’s recipe is a delicious nod to a beloved dessert staple: the milkshake. But this isn’t just any milkshake—this is a 3-ingredients Frozen Strawberry Plant-Milkshake, sweetened with agave nectar, and it’s incredibly simple to make. Trust me, you’re going to love how easy and satisfying this recipe is.
An authentic American milkshake traditionally contains ice cream to achieve its signature creamy texture. However, in this vegan version, we cleverly skip the ice cream by using frozen strawberries, which give the shake a rich, thick consistency without the need for a storebought icecream or complex procedure to make our own.
A Sweet Sip of History
As part of our American Vegan Cuisine Week, it’s only fitting to dive into the origins of the milkshake—a quintessential American treat. The milkshake’s journey began in the late 1800s as a boozy blend of whiskey, eggs, and milk. But it wasn’t long before the alcohol was dropped, and the milkshake transformed into the creamy, frothy concoction we know today. By the 1920s, thanks to the invention of the electric blender, milkshakes became a hit at soda fountains and diners, quickly embedding themselves into American culture.
The Milkshake Revolution: Vegan Style
Fast forward to today, and milkshakes have evolved to suit a variety of tastes and dietary preferences. As part of the modern food revolution, vegan milkshakes have emerged as a popular alternative, offering all the creamy, indulgent satisfaction of the original but without the dairy. These shakes are made with plant-based milks like almond, soy, oat, or coconut, and sweetened naturally—often with ingredients like agave nectar, which not only adds sweetness but also has a lower glycemic index than refined sugar.
