Ginger beer originated in England in the mid-18th century as a fermented alcoholic beverage made from ginger, sugar, water, and a starter culture known as “ginger beer plant.” It became popular due to its refreshing and spicy flavor. Traditionally, the fermentation process would produce a mildly alcoholic drink, but over time, non-alcoholic versions became more common, especially with the rise of temperance movements in the 19th century. Today, ginger beer is enjoyed worldwide and often used as non-alcoholic alternative to beer.

Apple cider, insted, dates back to ancient times when apples were first cultivated in Central Asia and spread to Europe. The practice of fermenting apple juice to create cider likely began with the Celts in what is now the United Kingdom. By the Middle Ages, apple cider had become a staple beverage in Europe, especially in regions where grapes were harder to grow for wine. In colonial America, apple cider was incredibly popular due to the abundance of apples, and it was often safer to drink than water. Today, apple cider exists in two main forms: the non-alcoholic version, often enjoyed in autumn, and hard cider, which is fermented and contains alcohol. Both types continue to be beloved for their crisp, refreshing taste and deep connection to agricultural traditions.
